The desire to start a blog, and particularly a vegan blog, grows out of a desire to chronicle the places that I have been that have catered to a cruelty free lifestyle and the people that I have met through said lifestyle.
I went vegetarian sometime around Easter 2006. I had considered it before this, but never seriously. My main concern being how to tell everyone without coming across as a wanker. I dreaded telling people that I did not eat meat without a decent preceding period of having not eaten meat.
I was vegetarian until January 24th 2007 at which point I stopped consuming dairy and other animal derived products. I had started considering it soon after going vegetarian as I became more interested in Animal Rights, initially having removed meat from my diet mainly for aesthetic reason. I began to feel that vegetarian wasn't "enough". It felt like a cop out. I labelled myself as a person who did not eat animals, yet I still consumed their milk and their eggs and the collagen from their skin and bones. I was supporting, through my spent dollar (which is the only support important in a market economy) the meat industry and the suffering of thousands of animals. I felt like a hypocrite.
I have been as cruelty free, as I am capable of being, ever since (675 days and counting). It is not possible to always be 100% vegan, mistakes will always be made in a society that is as dependant on animal products as the one we live in. But I try very hard. I never knowingly eat animal products and always make an effort to know.
But this is not a soap box to preach upon. I want to share with others the experiences I have had with Vegan/Vegan-friendly restaurants, people and places. The internet is a wealth of information for a Vegan. It brings together a community of like-minded individuals from many different backgrounds and places. I would like to add to this culture.
